Sample hot dogs in Reykjavik, find some quirky bars to spend your evenings in and see some of the best natural views you’ve maybe ever seen!

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Reykjavik

Hallo! Welcome to Iceland. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm today. Being so far north, Reykjavik’s daylight can change dramatically between seasons – 4 hours in winter and up to 22 in summer – which means you’ll either have a lot of time to party or a lot of time to nap in the sun. After the meeting, maybe head out to dinner or check out the craft beer scene with the group (your leader always has the best recommendations) and explore the nightlife (or late-day life?) in this coastal capital.

  • Day 2

    Golden Circle

Follow Iceland’s Golden Circle today with a few smooth, scenic drives. First, visit Thingvellir National Park and the Parliament Plains – this is the site of Europe's oldest parliament, founded in AD 930. If you notice a big ridge of water in the landscape, you’re probably looking at the Silfra fissure, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly ripping apart. Then check out the Strokkur Geyser and if you’re lucky, maybe see it blast water through the air. Finally, swing by the Gullfoss double waterfall on the Hvita River to witness the impressive cascades. On the way to your accommodation, there’s the option to stop at Secret Lagoon in Fludir for some steamy hot springs action - built in 1891, this is Iceland’s oldest man-made pool! Fed by the Vaomalahver, Basahver and Litli Geysers, the pool’s water flows continuously, meaning it stays warm (38 to 40 degrees Celsius year-round), clean and rich in sulphur.

  • Day 3

    South Coast

Today, you’ll drive along the south coast of Iceland – one of the most popular areas in the country due to the natural beauty dotting the coast. Begin with a visit to Gluggafoss, also known as Merkjarfoss, the most prominent waterfall in a series of falls running off the Merkja River. Continue to Skogafoss on the Skoga River and marvel at the cliffside drop – here, you can climb the stairs to the right of the falls and watch the birds dive in and out of the cliff face. If the season's right, head on to Dyrholaey Nature Reserve and see the cliffs that jut out into the sea before visiting the famed black sands of Reynisdrangar (season permitting) – voted one of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world. From here, pass through Vik before continuing east to the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Tonight, you’ll stay near Reynivellir.

  • Day 4

    Jokulsarlon / Vik

Feeling like you could tackle Europe’s largest icecap? This morning, you can embark on an optional walk on Vatnajokull – you don’t really need any special experience to sign up for a glacier walk here, so don’t let the size scare you. Glaciers like Vatnajokull are sadly melting away due to rising global temperatures, so seriously consider this if it's on your bucket list while it’s still possible. In summer, you can also take an optional boat ride and glide through the waters for a different perspective. After, continue exploring Vatnajokull National Park – a wilderness area known for its huge glaciers, mountain trails and Svartifoss waterfall – which you’ll take a short hike to and witness the cascades tumbling down over black basalt columns. Today is not a day to forget your camera! If the season’s right, you might also make a pitstop at Fjadrargljufur – a unique serpent-like canyon shaped by erosion over thousands of years. Later, arrive in the remote seafront village of Vik, where you’ll have a free night to explore.

  • Day 5

    Vik / Reykjavik

Make your way back to Reykjavik, but not before chasin’ some more waterfalls! Today, you’ll visit mighty Seljalandsfoss – you can actually walk behind the falls and see the cascades from underneath (raincoat recommended). Just a short walk away is Gljufrabui (meaning Canyon Dweller). Bask in the cascades of this towering waterfall that’s a bit more off-the-beaten-track as some other tourist favourites. Cap off your waterfall tour with a visit to Urridafoss – on Iceland’s longest river, this is the most voluminous waterfall in the country. Arrive in Reykjavik in the afternoon and head out on an orientation walk with your leader. Icelandic locals have a special relationship with hot dogs, so you’ll have the option to stop by a hot dog stand and see what all the fuss is about – it’s said that you haven’t really tasted a proper hot dog until you’ve had one of these! Tonight, maybe go shopping for a few souvenirs, or grab your group for a few drinks at one of Reykjavik’s quirky bars to celebrate the last night of your adventure.

  • Day 6

    Reykjavik

With no further activities planned, your trip comes to an end after breakfast. But your adventure doesn’t have to end! If you’re staying on, why not spend today on a snorkelling day trip in Silfra Fissure or visit Sky Lagoon's oceanside geothermal hot pools. If you’d like to extend your stay backdropped by mountains, just speak to your booking agent.

  • I’m actually not sure where to begin on reviewing this trip - to sum up, it was the experience of a lifetime!! As a solo traveller, I could not recommend Intrepid and this trip specifically even more, whether Iceland is on your bucket-list or not (I definitively recommend it should be). For context, I travelled in August which is the end of summer. The tour itself covers SO much in a short time - each day is jam packed but in the best way. There is time to relax on the bus between locations so it didn’t feel exhausting, and every place you get to see is phenomenal!! This tour has carefully chosen the most iconic places to see in Iceland - whilst some are busy with tourists, others are quiet, hidden gems that you probably wouldn’t know about without the amazing Intrepid tour guides. There are optional activities which is great depending on your comfort level/budget. I found it a great mix - I would say I’m average fitness level and was able to engage in all of the activities (if you’re on the fence about the glacier hike, I 100% recommend going - I almost didn’t because I was nervous but my group encouraged me and it ended up being a highlight of the trip). Our guide Arni is one of the greatest humans I have ever met!!! He was so full of knowledge, and took us to every place we could possibly fit into the 6 days. Not only was he a great guide to see and learn about Iceland with, he genuinely cared about us as people and really looked after us. Arni honestly went above and beyond - the best tour guide I have ever had!!!!!!! He went out of his way to make sure we saw as many places and native animals as possible which was so special. If you end up with Arni as your guide, you have won the lottery and will have an AMAZING time. He was funny, full of helpful tips & I want to reiterate, really cared about and looked after us - the perfect guide/leader. If you book a trip to Iceland, chances are people will keep telling you how expensive it is - and while that is true - Intrepid informs you about all of this and suggests a budget for the trip. We also had the opportunity to shop at supermarkets regularly and this helped save money on eating out! It was definitely doable, don’t let it put you off. It’s true what they say about the weather - one minute its sunny and you’re warm, the next its windy and raining - if anything, this adds to the beauty of the country - just pack layers and waterproofs (oh and hiking boots + bathers for the lagoons). The accommodation on this trip was PHENOMENAL, a mix of staying in the city (Reykjavik) and some beautiful remote areas on the coast of Iceland - incredibly high standards and really cosy vibes - truly blown away and amazing value money. Our transport was perfect - a minibus/van which sat all of us comfortably, had access to wifi, heating & air conditioning. This may have been luck, but I truly made lifelong friends from this trip - as a solo female traveller, I felt 100% safe the entire time - whether I was with the group or on my own in Iceland. My tip would be to try and stay an extra day/night on either side of this trip to squeeze bulk opportunity in your trip to Iceland - in addition to the tour, I visited the Blue Lagoon, did a horse riding tour and Northern Lights experience. Intrepid helped book my flights and additional nights accommodation - I will recommend them to anyone wanting to do a tour, they were SO helpful from my first enquiry about the trip through to the end. There is truly something for everyone in Iceland, and it is the most beautiful country I have ever seen. This trip was life changing and if it wasn’t for this Intrepid Tour I don’t know if I would have gone. To have everything taken care of for you is fantastic - you don’t have to worry about driving or navigating foreign roads, or finding all of the hidden gems because your local guide is so experienced. If I could give this infinity stars I would - it was so amazing, I plan to hopefully visit again in winter.
